New Economist and Organ Donor Reviews
the organ donors | famine's my middle name | lp | human conduct/breath mint/hit dat | in short: rad as fuck
when sean from hit dat records told me he'd be sending me a copy of this record, he warned that it was quite a bit different from the organ donors' "right for life, left for dead" 7" i had reviewed a few weeks ago. i loved that 7" and was sure i would love the lp, too. i was right and so was he. taking a gigantic leap in a different direction, the organ donors have created a beautifully confusing lp featuring two untitled tracks. they've left behind the manic electro beats and group scream-alongs this time around and has opted instead to amass a gathering of whips and whirs and backwards clips and sparsely intricate guitar pieces and whistles and pretty piano parts. they've set stringed instruments against tinney keyboards and organs. the liner notes consist of an oddly disturbing story that slightly reminded me of the writing style found in jane hohenberger's (now jane lecroy) "nat black came back", only weirder. i imagine that this lp would be considered the soundtrack to the story. atleast in my mind it is. wonderfully odd and intriguing.-- The Set-up 8/1/04

economist | s/t | cdep | hit dat | in short: rad as fuck
this ep brought back alot of great memories. it reminded me of some really great bands of the past, such as twelve hour turn, sleepy time trio and thumdnail, among others. beyond those bands, i'm unable to come up with any currently active ones to compare them to because, in truth, they're doing something no one else really is these days and i think that's fantastic. they bring their own touch to the dark, screamy sense those bands had by making it slightly more guitar driven. on a song like 1986, they incorporate a guitar sound that can be remniscent of old hardcore punk (circa 1986?) or motorcross, which features chaotic yet technical guitars that seem so out of control yet perfectly contained.
the fact that there's two guitarists going at it gives the band a distinctly full sound as both guitarists keeps themselves busy. the vocals manage to hold their own against the dual guitar tracks in a screamy powerful way. i would definately suggest this to anyone that's into mid/late 90's emo or just loves just good screamy music-- The Set-up 8/1

    the new flesh review
the new flesh reviewed in http://www.theset-up.com

the new flesh | self titled | 7inch | hit dat | in short: rad
totally untrue story i'm making up as i type: in early 1989, right before sub pop records released bleach, a kid lifted a beatup tape recorder above his head and recorded the loud, obnoxious sounds of the nirvana house show he was at. he then mailed copies of that tape to chris dodge and thurston moore, respectively, who both enjoyed it quite a bit. 15 years later, chris and thurston meet at a lightning bolt show, discover they both love the same tape, move to baltimore and start up a band called the new flesh and release a record on hit dat. the end.
the only parts of that story that are true is being in baltimore and hit dat releasing this record. the rest of it, cool as it would be, just isn't. but this record still rules, even with the abssence of chris and thurston...the silk screened sleeve makes up their absence for me.
